About the challenge

System is a Public Benefit Corporation building knowledge infrastructure to help solve complex challenges in the world. Our first open-science offering, the System Public Graph [BETA], is a living and open map of scientific knowledge, containing millions of quantitative relationships drawn from peer-reviewed research across disciplines, and updated regularly with new findings.

We're now hosting our first public hackathon, the System Public Challenge, in November at our headquarters in NYC. Our goal is to foster compelling applications of the Public Graph to real problems affecting science and society — and to take the first step in cultivating a global community of systems thinkers working across the boundaries between disciplines.

Challenges for the hackathon are listed here.

Note: Registration, team formation and challenge briefs will run here on Devpost, opening about three weeks before the event. Requirements

Format

Teams compete in one of three categories, using the Public Graph on its own or combined with any other open data. Specific challenge questions, set with partner organizations and domain experts, will be published about two weeks before the event.

  • Explore: Analytical work that integrates data and generates new insight, such as mapping the evidence around a question to show what is settled, contested or missing.

  • Visualize: Design and communication, turning relationships in the graph into compelling, accurate visual stories for a non-specialist audience.

  • Build: Working tools on top of the graph, such as hypothesis generation or integration with other pieces of analytical and scholarly infrastructure.

While challenges from individual disciplines are welcome, we hold that the most pressing challenges worldwide are interconnected, so we are deliberately favoring interdisciplinary problems at the intersection of fields such as climate, environment, food and health.
